• NEW YORKERS AND BORDEAUX: FROM DISDAIN TO DELIGHT

    Not so long ago, quite a few young New York sommeliers might have been seen high-fiving one another as they disparaged the big bully Bordeaux.  In their view, and in the minds of many other young American wine drinkers, Bordeaux was a smug, wealthy, self-satisfied emblem of a bygone era, once the hallowed standard-bearer for great wine but now unfashionable and, worse, irrelevant.

    How quickly things change. No, the Brooklyn vinoscenti have not adopted Bordeaux as an ironic symbol.  But the widespread dismissal of Bordeaux seems to have achieved the result of casting it (still the world’s leading wine region) as an unlikely underdog.  Many who so recently wore their disdain of Bordeaux as a badge of honor are now embracing the region and its wines.

    “I think it’s almost become this Jura-type thing,” said Daniel Johnnes, wine director for Daniel Boulud’s Dinex restaurant group and an importer, referring to a long-ignored region in eastern France that became the darling of the wine vanguard in the last decade. “It was so uncool to drink it, that you’re now cool if you do.” (suite…)

    Sandy: conséquences sur le marché new-yorkais du vin — Le magazine Decanter rapporte le témoignage de cavistes, restaurateurs et amateurs de New York City dont les caves ont été dévastées par la hausse des eaux.
    New York est le 4ème Etat producteur de vins des USA — Le site Bourgogne Live rapporte le cas de la Winery Red Hook située à Brooklyn, qui a tout perdu : ses vins, les barriques ayant été complètement immergées, son matériel de cave, ses données commerciales…

    Les inondations catastrophiques causées par la tornade Sandy et les coupures durables d’électricité qu’elle a entraînées, pourraient avoir un fort impact sur le marché des vins de la Grosse Pomme. La première conséquence est une perte de chiffres d’affaire pour les professionnels, avec notamment la contraintes de fermeture d’établissements pendant Halloween. Ensuite l’impact sur les stocks, certains irrécupérables. On peut supposer une hausse de la demande à terme pour les vins prestigieux, comme à la suite des catastrophes que le Japon a connues au printemps 2011.

  • FINE WINES OF NEW YORK STATE

    The Target Audience: wine press and wine trade.
    The Availability/Catalogue: at best, scattered. There are some agents (e.g., Hanna for Raphael, Edward’s for Bedell) but Robert Ketchin is your best bet for details on availability. The emphasis, of course, was on expensive wines, over $25 to showcase the productions.
    The Quote/Background: It has been years since the last New York trade show was in town, also at George Brown. Much marketing has been concentrated at the Fall and Spring consumer wine shows, as well as HOSTEX.
    We were delighted that there was a seminar for us to catch up with New York wine development. Robert Ketchin led a PowerPoint presentation and we had notes and a CD of screen captures.
    We tackled the three principal areas: Finger Lakes, Long Island and Hudson River (33 wineries on the Hudson), with many facts and figures and wines to taste. (suite…)
