• PLOT TO POISON ROMANÉE CONTI: THE BOOK

    In January 2010, proprietor Aubert de Villaine received a threat to his livelihood, if not his life: Pay more than 1 million euros in ransom, or his Burgundy vines would be poisoned.

    Maximillian Potter first wrote about this plot for Vanity Fair and has now authored a book called Shadows in the Vineyard: The True Story of the Plot to Poison the World’s Greatest Wine (cover, left).This wine, he tells National Public Radio’s Scott Simon, is really something special: « Without being overly hyperbolic, it’s definitely the finest flavor I’ve even had in my mouth, » he says, I drank it and … I was immediately filled with an incredible warmth.  It just seemed like something that was alive and wonderful and warm« .     Diffusé à quatorze reprises sur France Télévisions en janvier et février, le documentaire de Thomas Bravo-Maza sur la Romanée Conti a été vu par plusieurs millions de téléspectateurs en France ! Et la distribution DVD en Europe débute en juillet.

    Ce documentaire nous touche d’abord par sa simplicité et son évidence : Thomas-Bravo (ci-contre) a réussi une ode visuelle.

    Passionné très tôt par le vin parce que c’est « un sujet sans limites, jamais terminé », en quête des nouvelles impressions qui surgissent à chaque rencontre de vignerons, il réalise des sujets sur le vin pour la Télévision Suisse Romande avec à la fois la nécessité d’efficacité télévisuelle et un « esprit » cinéma, dont il est proche depuis sa jeunesse, ayant cotoyé, outre son ami Cedric Klapisch, Francis Ford Coppola, Alain Cavalier en 1986, par Erling MandelmannClaude Chabrol qui lui ont chacun donné leurs conseils, ou Alain Cavalier (à droite en 1986), prévu pour réaliser le film et qui n’a pu être libre aux dates du tournage et lui en a naturellement légué la réalisation.

    Thomas Bravo-Maza a parlé avec lui de son refus de refaire les prises, notamment dans sa série de portraits de femmes-artisanes (1), discipline qu’il s’est appropriée : « même si je suis méticuleux et jamais content du résultat, donc tenté de refaire, je n’y ai pas cédé » dit-il, « j’ai voulu qu’on sente les choses sans être démonstratif, ni à l’image, ni dans le commentaire ».     LINCOLN SILIAKUS riding SolexI had hoped to do the trip through the Côtes du Nuits logically, from north to south. But when the owner of La Romanée-Conti, Aubert de Villaine offered to see me on the first day, I decided to base myself in the middle at Vougeot and ply the Côte.
    His personal assistant met me as I wheeled Solex through the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s red gates.  He guided me into a simple, elegant meeting room.  A moment later, before I had time to get even more nervous, de Villaine appeared.  « In my generation, everyone had a velosolex, » he said. « It brings back memories.  I had one when I was 20 years old. »  Although he’s tall, he doesn’t look down at you.  Today he is dressed in simple blue cotton trousers and a clean cotton trekking shirt.

    I suggest that we wheel Solex up to the cross at Romanée-Conti.  He laughs when I say I want a photo of him with it.  « The view from the top over there, up by the wall, is great.  Sorry I don’t have time to go up there today. »
    I ask if facing east makes a difference.  « This is what makes Burgundy what it is. » We pass a small bare field.
    « Yes, this plot is ours. We pulled out the vines last year.  We are going to let it sit like that for four or five years, then plant it.  That means they’ll be wine in the bottle in about 20 years. » (suite…)
