    The Event: Presentation of report from the VINEXPO sponsored International Wine and Spirit Record analyzing the changes in the production of 28 countries and consumption in 114 countries.

    The Quote/Background: “According to the industry-leading study, worldwide consumption of wine will grow by more than 6% over a five-year period, reaching 2 816 billion cases by 2012. In 10 years, world wine consumption will have increased by 14.07% to 4.16 billion bottles, roughly equal to the annual production of wine in the U.S., the world’s fourth largest producer.

    The Event: a 2007 Futures offering from Lailey Vineyard in Niagara on the Lake (below)

    Derek Barnett is the winemaker, Ed Haddon is the sommelier.
    The Venue: The Fine Wine Reserve Inc. 800 King St., West Suite 801. Toronto, tel.: 416 593 9463 (593 WINE)
    The Target Audience: private clients.
    The Availability/Catalogue: Three of the 2007 vintage wines are already in bottle (Counterpoint, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay), the remaining 7 are barrel samples. Pinot noir and Chardonnay are to be out in February, the balance in April. Futures orders were taken on site.
    The Quote: Derek has had a long association with Lailey, buying fruit from them when he was a winemaker at Southbrook. In the fall of 2001, he moved to NOTL and joined Lailey as a winemaker and business partner.
    The Wines: it was hard to taste the reds since they were barrel samples. The Pinot was the most advanced. (suite…)

  • A TOUR OF NIAGARA WINERIES

    The Time and Date: Wednesday, June 25, 2008 all day
    The Event: annual tour of Niagara wineries by Wine Council of Ontario for WWCC members. There were 11 of us.
    The Venue: five wineries: Southbrook, Cattail Creek, Coyote’s Run, Ravine Vineyard (not yet open), and Niagara College Teaching Winery.
    The Target Audience: WWCC wine writers.
    The Availability/Catalogue: all wines are available, or will be, from the winery.
    The Quote: “We need cool water – it was a scorcher of a day!”
    The Wines: At Southbrook (581 Niagara Stone Road, RR4, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario L0S 1J0 Canada), we learned that the winery not only has a LEED gold status in its construction, but also that there is biodynamic winemaking (since 2006). They have a periwinkle blue wall (205 metres) that is spectacular. Shades of Pink Floyd…

    French winemakers protest to demand government aid. But « what if » this also happened on the Niagara Frontier? Read on

    MONTPELLIER, France (AP) — Winemakers in southern France have burned two police cars and vandalized supermarkets during protests to demand government aid.

    Vintners in France’s Languedoc-Roussillon region have been protesting plummeting prices for their regional wines as well as rising fuel costs.

    Thousands of wine growers demonstrated in Montpellier to demand government emergency measures and financial support as wine prices continue to fall. Demonstrators were tear gassed by police during clashes in Montpellier, southern France. Protesters broke windows at the courthouse in the city of Montpellier. In nearby Montagnac, protesters wielding baseball bats chased police from their vehicles and set the cars on fire. Protesters also damaged four bank buildings.

    At three regional supermarkets they sacked the wine aisles. Two police were slightly injured in the protests Wednesday and early Thursday.

    WELLAND, Ontario (CP) — Winemakers in southern Ontario have burned two police cars and vandalized LCBO liquor stores during protests to demand government aid.

    Vintners in Ontario’s Niagara region have been protesting plummeting prices for their regional grapes and wines as well as rising fuel costs.

    Hundreds of wine and grape growers demonstrated in Welland to demand government emergency measures and financial support as local wine prices continue to fall. Demonstrators were tear gassed by police during clashes in both St. Catharines and Welland.

    Protesters broke windows at the courthouse in the city of Welland. In nearby Grimsby, protesters wielding baseball bats chased police from their vehicles and set the cars on fire. Protesters also damaged four bank buildings.

    At three LCBO stores they sacked the wine aisles. Two police were slightly injured in the protests Wednesday and early Thursday.
