    It’s a race to the bottom. Now that winemakers from the Languedoc-Roussillon have received a generous handout from the French government, their confrères from the Rhône are feeling piqued. The year « just starting is difficult, even catastophic« , according to La Provence, a local paper.     Jérôme, le grand roman oublié de Jean-Pierre Martinet, est reparu après 30 ans d’absence aux éditions Finitude (novembre 2008).
    Publié pour la 1ère fois au     Sagittaire en 1978, il était devenu introuvable, on ne parlait plus de ce livre-monstre qui résonne comme un éclat de rire terrifiant. Cette réédition est augmentée de textes de ses amis éditeurs Alfred Eibel et Raphaël Sorin, et contient trois chapitres inédits avec une nouvelle fin.
    Admirateurs et détracteurs vont enfin pouvoir le (re)lire et connaître le frisson du pire, sans aucune modération !

    L’histoire est simple : obsédé par Polly, la jeune fille qu’il croit aimer, Jérôme Bauche se lance dans une quête hallucinée, alcoolique, dantesque à travers une ville étrange, un peu Paris un peu Saint-Petersbourg, où il s’enfonce irrémédiablement vers l’enfer et nous y entraîne avec lui, de gré et de force.

  • A WET YEAR DOWN IN SABLET

    What a year it’s been down here! It is still raining, and there is snow on the hills.  The vendange was wet, too, and a lot of grapes were rotten. Domains with the resources to do it threw out a lot of grapes.  But I have just tasted some 2008s from the barrel from Dom Berthet-Reyne in Cairanne, both white and red.  Promising.  It won’t be a good year, but there may be some good wine.  On the other hand, and this has to remain a secret, don’t hesitate to buy the excellent 2007s.  The 2007 Bordeaux vintage shouldn’t turn you off the south.
    I’ll report again when the sun comes out.
