    DESPITE CRISIS GREEK WINES AIM HIGHER

    « In the wine business the situation in Greece is serious but, I believe, ultimately promising » Ted Lelekas wrote in a post last July, posted again on Oct. 4. On the occasion of a Greek wine presentation I went at the OIV* in Paris to check how consistent his say-so was.

    Yiannis Paraskevopoulos from Gaia Wines, which he founded together with Leon Karatsalos early in 1994, was in charge of a short Greek wines panorama on this Nov. 29 presentation handled by the Greek embassy in Paris. Both an agronomist graduated from Thessaloniki University and an œnologue from Bordeaux, he is currently one of the top Greek wine experts. (suite…)

    Rappel du FIGARO —

    Quelques jours avant Noël, l’Etat a apporté aux producteurs du Médoc un cadeau inespéré : la renaissance des Crus Bourgeois. Cette mention peut  figurer à nouveau sur les bouteilles à partir du millésime 2008. Épilogue heureux d’une farce tragi-comique qui a débuté le 17 juin 2003.

    Ce jour-là est publié un arrêté ministériel classant 247 châteaux du Médoc « crus bourgeois », dont 87 « supérieurs » et 9 « exceptionnels ». Aussitôt, 80 châteaux non classés attaquent l’arrêté. Pour eux, le coup est rude : en perdant le droit d’apposer la mention Cru Bourgeois sur leur étiquette, usage en vigueur depuis 1932, c’est la valeur même de leur propriété qui s’effondre. (suite…)

    The Sansulas of India can take solace from the fact that they are not the only ones that are tossed around and left in the lurch after working hard promoting a foreign brand which later takes a competitor in its lap, with the Bordeaux First Growth Château Lafite which has been in news for the prices shooting up in auctions and retail, changing partner in China after seven years’ successful relationship.

    The seven-year relationship between Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Château Lafite and their Chinese distributor Summergate has ended.  With effect from January 1 next year, their competitor and the biggest importer in China, ASC would be marketing their wines. (suite…)
